CUBA – Hundreds of members of Cuba’s LGBT community staged a colourful parade through the streets of Havana, marching against homophobia in the first public demonstration of its kind to take place on the island following the approval last year of a new family law allowing same-sex marriage.

The event is held annually by the National Centre for Sex Education of Cuba to mark the International Day against Homophobia on May 17.

Mariela Castro, Director of Cenesex and daughter of former Cuban President Raul Castro, led the parade on Saturday alongside Cuba’s first lady and other government and communist party officials.

In 2022, Cubans approved gay marriage and adoption by LGBT couples overwhelmingly.
