NASSAU, BAHAMAS – At Lucaya International School in Grand Bahama, learning doesn’t start in a textbook, it starts with a question.

For Head of Secondary, Nigel Kirkby, the goal is simple – build confident learners who understand how the world works and their place in it.

“The whole process is to build the child, and enable them to be successful in life,” he said.

From pre-k through high school, students follow the globally recognized International Baccalaureate Program, designed not just to inform, but to help students think critically.

“One of the aspects is the theory of knowledge program, students are actively questioning everything they know to see whether it is the truth. Has it changed? Is it moving on?,” he said.

It’s an approach rooted in real world applications, showing students the “why” behind what they learn.

When students learn differently, teachers adjust.

“If I don’t learn the way you teach, can you please teach me the way I learn? That’s a very central point of our educational process,” Kirkby said.

Smaller class sizes mean more one-on-one attention, and more confidence where it matters most.

“They get very used to verbalizing their ideas, their thoughts, and that confidence helps them massively in their endeavors,” he said.

That’s why Kirkby says what LIS offers is more than education, it’s preparation for life.
