Man Found Guilty Of Sex Crimes Gets New Trial After Convictions Overturned

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man accused of indecent assault and attempted unlawful sexual intercourse has been granted a new trial after the court of appeal overturned his convictions.

Enrique Adderley was convicted of four counts of indecent assault and one count of unlawful sexual intercourse in February 2025 and sentenced to eight years in prison.

The charges stemmed from incidents that allegedly took place between 2019 and 2020 when his accuser was 14 and 15-years-old.

She claimed he caressed her breasts and touched her genitals. On one occasion, he allegedly tried to have sex with her against her will.

During the trial, the accuser produced screenshots of their alleged WhatsApp conversations.

The trial judge entered the purported messages for identification.

However, the jury was allowed to consider the messages while deliberating although the judge did not give them instructions on how to treat the messages.

As a result, the court said the convictions could not stand.
