UNITED STATES – Meta says it has removed more than 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts in the first half of the year, many of them linked to international scam centers, some reportedly operated through forced labor.

In a statement released Tuesday, the company said the takedown is part of a broader effort to combat increasingly sophisticated scams that span across multiple platforms, including dating apps, social media, and payment services.

Meta also introduced new safety tools for WhatsApp and revealed it disrupted a major scam operation in Cambodia with assistance from OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.
