NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Amendments to the Bridge Authority Bill aim to make provision for vesting the Bridge Authority with the function to acquire, own, construct, manage, maintain and operate any bridge as designated by the minister by order published in the Gazette.

Minister of Works Clay Sweeting, leading off the debate noting that bridges are essential to daily life across the country.

He calls the bill a step toward a comprehensive and sustainable framework. 

According to Sweeting, there about 40 bridges across the country. Seventeen are considered major structures, two of the bridges, the east and west Paradise Island bridges are in good standing.

As for the remaining 38, Sweeting says their conditions vary.

The iconic Glass Window Bridge in Eleuthera is also a top priority.

But, former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis seemingly underwhelmed with the bill noting that portions of the bill or no longer applicable Wednesday.
