Mixed 4×400 Team Qualifies for Paris Olympics

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The mixed 4x400m relay team provided the highlight of the weekend for the home crowd at the World Athletics Relays.

The team of Steven Gardiner, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Alonzo Russell and Shania Adderley ran to a new national record of 3:12.81 seconds to win heat two on night two of qualification.

Gardiner got things started with a 45.08 split on the first leg and handed the baton off to the sixteen-year-old Adderley who went from the scapegoat on one to the hero on day two.

Adderley surrendered the lead on the anchor leg on day one, but delivered an awe inspiring performance last night with her split of 53.12 seconds.

Russell held third league and Miller-Uibo brought the baton home with the qualification and national record intact.

While everyone celebrated the qualification, the moment quickly became a celebration of Adderley’s performance against the odds.

Meanwhile, both 4×100 teams fail to qualify, but remain optimistic.

Both the men’s and women’s 4x100m teams failed to qualify for the Olympics but remained optimistic on the development of the teams.

In the women’s 4x100m the team of Devynne Charlton, Camille Rutherford, Charisma Taylor, and Printassia Johnson – finished ninth overall  on night two in 43.32 seconds. 

The men’s 4x100m team of Samson Colebrooke, Samalie Farrington, Carlos Brown and Ian Kerr finished 15th overall in 39.21 seconds.

And finally, it was a busy meet for Alonzo Russell as he went from the mixed 4×4 to the men’s 4×4.

He teamed up with Wendell Miller, Shakeem hall-smith, and Zion Shepherd to finished 9th overall on the second night of qualification in 3:08.29 seconds.

Shepherd was another 16-year old junior athlete thrust into the spotlight to run at the senior level.
