NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For years, Type 2 diabetes was known as “adult-onset diabetes” because it was most often diagnosed in people between the ages of 44 to 65-years-old. But now, a local doctor is saying a different demographic is starting to see more diagnoses… teenagers.

Type 2 diabetes is targeting our nation’s youth according to podiatric surgeon at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Danny Johnson.

The earlier onset comes with a price – earlier complications.

Nickia Bodie was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the 10th grade. At just 32-years-old, she has already had close near-amputation calls. Bodie says gathering a strong support team of family and doctors is key if you find yourself diagnosed with diabetes. What isn’t helpful she says, is choosing shame as your tool to try to help.
