New Cohort Graduates Find Purpose Through Second Chance Program

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – First launched in 2022 to steer at-risk youth away from gang violence and crime, the School Police Division’s Second Chance Programme is proving its lasting impact.

Through two weeks of intensive mentorship and discipline training, the initiative reshapes young lives.

During the Second Chance Programme graduation ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, 2026 participant Deontay Rolle shared how the experience transformed his mindset.

“First know yourself, so I can be around people that elevate you. Thirdly, practice discipline, and lastly, watch others do a 180 and improve myself. We have a choice to walk with. It doesn’t make you weak, or make you okay. A point in front of your parents, your friend is walking away, always choose peace, and choose the path. I mean, know your purpose in life.”

The training comes at a critical time, as police face staggering numbers involving youth violence, with Royal Bahamas Police Force Commissioner Shanta Knowles highlighting those troubling realities during her address to the group.

“The reality confronting our young people today is serious. In 2025, all four murder victims who were 18 years or younger were school dropouts. Of the 16 persons aged 18 or younger who were charged with murder, 13, or 81 percent, were school dropouts.”

“I don’t share those statistics to frighten you, young people. I share them because choices have consequences and education is important.”

Tourism Minister Glenys Hanna Martin, stressing that keeping young people focused and supported remains a top national priority.
