New Shantytown Committee Formed
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With the shantytown problem in Abaco worsening, the Davis administration has promised to address the issue.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With the shantytown problem in Abaco worsening, the Davis administration has promised to address the issue.
An inter-ministerial committee is set to begin work according to Press Secretary Clint Watson, who says their first order of business is to catalogue the illegal structures.
Watson adding that this newest committee is not to be confused with the shantytown committee put in place by the former administration.
It was recently revealed that the Farm shantytown grew by an estimated 200 acres since hurricane Dorian in 2019.
Since the monster storm decimated the Mudd and Pigeon Pea shantytowns, officials say a new shantytown was formed off S.C Bootle Highway.
Watson says one of the challenges is Bahamians are facilitating the development, as some of the land had been issued to Bahamian farmers, but instead they are renting the spaces.
