NEW ZEALAND – New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will not seek re-election and plans to step down no later than early February. 

The leader announced the news in a televised statement yesterday choking up as she detailed how six “challenging” years in the job had taken a toll.

The shock announcement comes as polling indicates her labour party faces a difficult path to re-election in october.

Labour MPs will vote to find her replacement on Sunday.
