NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Omar Archer has lost his appeal against his conviction for intentional libel.

Archer was in November 2022 sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for the crime.

A local journalist made a criminal complaint against Archer in 2015 after he falsely posted on his Facebook page that she had a sexually transmitted disease and was spreading it.

The Court of Appeal ruled that Archer’s appeal against conviction was without merit. However, the Court allowed his appeal against sentence.

The three month sentence was replaced with 14 days in prison, the time he’d spent on remand. Archer was given until May 17 to pay a $5,000 fine to avoid spending three months in prison.

He will risk a one month sentence should he failed to pay $5,000 in compensation to his victim by July 22.
