NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With the largest appointed cabinet in history, there are 22 ministers with portfolios, 7 ministers of state, and 3 other sitting members of Parliament as Parliamentary Secretaries.

Meanwhile, the Davis administration argues this approach will spread the responsibility, leading to better governance, but critics have raised questions, especially regarding the creation of new portfolios.

Executive Director of the Organization of Responsible Governance, Matt Aubry, tells us that the government needs to explain clearly to taxpayers, the necessity of it, especially the new ministries.

“It means that there’s also less opportunity for citizens to understand how these decisions are being made, or see their interest balance in a more robust debate. So understanding what the portfolio mean what are these new portfolios that are being brought forward.”

“You saw some other ideas of community relations with a new item, [I] think it was brought forward. There was a separation between youth and and culture, and what is that going to bring?”

Then there’s the controversial appointment of former Island Luck CEO and Fort Charlotte MP Sebas Bastian and Seabreeze MP Leslia Miller-Brice as cabinet ministers.

Bastian stepped down as Island Luck CEO leading up to election, and Brice’s husband, resigned from his post as CEO of A Sure Win Gaming House, but there have still been questions and criticisms surrounding their appointment.

“The interpretation of of the gaming law it should be one that was presented before versus retroactively, because again once something is highlighted, and then you explain it after the fact you’ve lost that opportunity for for more mutual respect.”

“Maybe stepping back from the political back-and-forth and really getting back down to a citizen level, and thinking what are the users, what are the what are those who are most dependent upon these systems thinking about this?”
