The Bahamas Beats Guatemala in Penalties

Nassau, NP, The Bahamas. The Bahamas began the 2023 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Cup with a bang, beating Guatemala in sudden death to take their first match of the tournament in front of a small but passionate hometown crowd at the National Beach Soccer Stadium at the Sidney Poitier Bridge.

Juan Flores of Guatemala would score the game’s first goal with 5 minutes left in the second period. Leslie St. Fleur would tie the game for the home team with his own goal with one minute left in the period. Miguel Gonzalez of Guatamala would trade goals with Wood Julmis in the third period to end regulation, sending the game into penalties.

Penalties would end in a stalemate, sending the match into sudden death.

Gary Joseph would convert the first goal of sudden death. All The Bahamas would need at that point is a save from goalie Michael Butler and just when his team needed it, Butler delivered in the clutch, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The Bahamas is back in action tomorrow night against Belize at 7:30.

Admission is free.
