NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With just over a dozen COVID-19 deaths recorded in The Bahamas in over a week, the Pan-American Health Organization reveals that while it continues to encourage people to get vaccinated, deaths in the region have increased by nearly 33-percent over the previous week.

PAHO Director, Dr. Carissa Etienne says deaths in the region have increased for the fourth consecutive week.

Meanwhile, the number of fully vaccinated Bahamians and residents stands at 159,229. It’s a figure PAHO wants to see rise even higher.

PAHO Assistant Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa says vaccine hesitancy has been high in the Caribbean – the region hardest hit when tourism came to a standstill. However, he notes that vaccination is key to that sector.

Since the start of 2022, 3,760 Bahamians and residents have become fully vaccinated. Dr. Barbosa says trusted doctors and healthcare workers have a role to play in battling vaccine hesitancy.
