NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A prominent clergyman is in disagreement with efforts to criminalize marital rape saying that people can lie.

Speaking at the National Ecumenical Service Sunday, Evangelist Rex Major questioned how spouses would prove marital rape, adding that some women may use rape as a tool to end their marriage.

His comments came after Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe revealed government is still in talks with the church about some of the wording in the bill.

The service held at Evangelistic Temple on Collins Avenue is just one of many events leading up to the 50th independence.

Major also spoke out against same-sex unions. His comments sparked applause from some in the crowd.
