NASSAU, BAHAMAS – No sugar tax any time soon. That’s the word from Prime Minister Philip Davis despite there being a proposed amendment to the Customs Management Bill 2023, which would empower the finance minister to make regulations providing for the payment of a health and wellness levy.

The levy will be on the importation of specified goods and domestically manufactured foods deemed to have a negative impact on health and wellness.

A 2019 steps report says there is a 20% chance of a Bahamian dying early or prematurely from a non-communicable disease.

Davis says at the moment they’re consulting stakeholders.
