NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Around the world, particularly in the Caribbean, many are seeing the ascension of a new British monarch as an opportunity to push for change. Here in The Bahamas, some politicians are reacting to calls for slavery reparations from the British.

Earlier in the year, then Prince Charles acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery” saying it “forever stains our history”.

Now, as he ascends the throne as King Charles III, the push for reparations from the British for those impacted by the Trans-Atlantic slave trade is back on center stage again, with many local and regional activists speaking up saying slavery reparations would be an opportunity for Charles to lead the way.

The minister suggests that next year’s CARICOM meeting, which is being hosted by The Bahamas, could see a lot discussions surrounding the issue. As regional leaders will be together for the first CARICOM meeting since the ascension of King Charles III.
