NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The country’s highest court has upheld a murder convict’s conviction and sentence.

Rodriguez Jean Pierre was convicted on February 3, 2013 of the March 24, 2012 stabbing death of Wendell Miller.

On May 3, 2013, Pierre was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment.

Almost six years later, on 30 May 2019, Pierre filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence.

He also made an application to extend the time limit for bringing the appeal, since section 17 of the Court of Appeal Act requires appeals to be filed within 21 days of the date of conviction.

The Court of Appeal refused the appellant’s application for an extension of time to appeal his conviction.

Pierre challenged this decision to the Privy Council and lost.
