NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A project is in the works aimed at protecting 20 percent of the onshore marine environment.

As officials from the Bahamas National Trust and the Ministry of Works and Utilities toured Bonefish Pond today, they revealed many residents use the protected area as a dumping ground.

Now BNT has formed a partnership with the government is looking to launch the GEF Project to help improve the infrastructural needs for Bonefish Pond.

BNT officials say the project will help upkeep and restore areas that have been damaged by heavy dumping.

Officials say there’s a need for increased security.

During a tour of the area Friday, Rolle revealed that locals have been using the area as a dumping ground in recent times.

He said things as big as refrigerators were found dumped in the area.

BNT Executive Director Lakeisha Anderson-Rolle says the immediate area is not open for fishing, adding that zoning areas are being considered. The GEF Project is a five-year project aimed at helping the country achieve the goal
