HAITI – A record 1.3 million people have been forced to leave their homes in Haiti due to a surge in armed violence over the last six months, according to the UN Migration Agency.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that the number of internally displaced people in Haiti has increased by 24% since December, marking the highest number of people displaced by violence the IOM has ever recorded in the country.

The UN also reported that gangs, heavily armed with weapons largely trafficked from the United States, have formed an alliance in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and now control 85% of the city.
