NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A spike in respiratory illnesses among young children has doctors advising parents to be on the lookout for symptoms that may indicate it’s time to seek medical help.

Cold and flu season making a return at the start of the new school year, now with a rise in respiratory illnesses.

General Pediatrician Dr. Charelle Lockhart works in both the public and private healthcare systems, where doctors are seeing younger patients being admitted to hospital with serious symptoms.

Last week, the Pediatric Department of Princess Margaret Hospital issued an advisory on respiratory illnesses, noting the illness presents with fever, cough and runny nose and can easily be managed at home; however, if there are certain signs of respiratory distress, it’s time to seek professional care.

Doctors say the spike is linked to the reopening of schools.

But, there’s no need for alarm. Dr. Lockhart says cold and flu season is upon us.
