VATICAN – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio left the Vatican today after seeing pope Leo for 2 and a half hours, in what was expected to ‌have been a fraught meeting following president Donald Trump’s repeated attacks on the Catholic leader over the Iran war.

VATICAN – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio left the Vatican today after seeing pope Leo for 2 and a half hours, in what was expected to ‌have been a fraught meeting following president Donald Trump’s repeated attacks on the Catholic leader over the Iran war.

He met initially with Leo before sitting down with senior Vatican officials, including top diplomat Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The Vatican and the U.S. State Department did not provide any ​immediate details about the encounters.
