CARIBBEAN – The United States’ National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for the Cayman Islands and a Tropical Storm warning for Jamaica today after a weather system in The Caribbean strengthened overnight.

The storm was expected to be named Rafael. Forecasters say it will bring heavy rain to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands before strengthening to a hurricane and likely hitting Cuba.

It’s expected to be near Jamaica by late Monday and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Heavy rainfall will affect the Western Caribbean with totals of 3 to 6 inches and up to 9 inches in Jamaica and Southern Cuba.
