NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The announcement came as part of the prime minister’s national address Monday (January 12th) where he outlined the government’s latest effort to bring relief to households facing increasing food prices.

Beginning April 1st, 5% VAT will no longer be applied to unprepared food items purchased at grocery stores across the country.

The exemption covers everyday essentials such as fresh produce, baby food and other basic grocery items.

Reaction on the streets of Grand Bahama this week was largely positive.

Well known environmentalist Joseph Darville says the measure is necessary.

However, Darville also adds that consideration should also be given to other sectors he believes are struggling with affordability across the country.

Now, some residents have expressed concern that the move may be politically motivated, with a general election expected this year.

Others however, say regardless of timing, it’s the savings that matters.
