NASSAU, BAHAMAS – If it’s one thing that’s linked to Christmas, it’s shopping.

Thousands of residents hit the streets every year to get those gifts and special items for those near and dear to them, but at times it can prove a bit costly.

We met this mother who says, while she has to be smart when it comes to spending, the joy in her son’s eyes outweighs the cost.

Natalia Brown – Shopper

“He’s very humble. He is very loving, very generous, so I feel like Christmas is a part of giving. It also symbolizes Jesus Christ.”

“I’m doing last minute shopping because I think he deserves the best. Christmas brings joy, and happiness to everyone.”

While many shop earlier in the month to avoid crowds, veteran shoppers like Ms. Black actually prefers the last-minute rush, saying the mall did a good job in managing the crowds this year.

“Stores seem to be more organized. The girls are wrapping well, so to me it’s going well.”

“I love the rush, I love the rush. I love the hustle and bustle, lot of people don’t like it, but I enjoy it because it reminds you of the season. You know what you’re in and so for me you know if an excitement just makes me feel good.”

While online shopping has become more and more popular, for some like Mr. Camille, nothing compares to the in-person mall experience.

“The mall has a variety of stuff which means we could get a lot of stuff done. They have the food places so when you’re shopping and you get a little hungry, you could get something to eat, [and] they have something for the kids. It’s a one stop shop for all.”

Marathon Mall’s Acting General Manager, Troy Johnson II, says shopping local helps to put money in the pockets of vendors this Christmas season.

“There are down periods throughout the year, so we would’ve had an uptick just prior to school opening, and of course traffic would’ve fallen off quite a bit.”

“You may get a little bit for halloween and then it dies off, and then I kid you not, for these probably two weeks leading into Christmas itself, you know where it is it is plentiful.”
