Sorority Donates Suits, Baby Clothing to Teen Moms

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Since its inception, the Nassau, Bahamas Alumnae Chapter (NBAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has played an integral role in PACE Bahamas, formerly known as the Teen Unwed Mothers program.

Continuing in that legacy, this week we donated business attire and baby clothing to the young women and their little ones. This is the third time that we’ve hosted a clothing drive in their honor, but this year’s effort has been overwhelming response from the public. Over 10 bins to was donated to PACE Bahamas’ students.

Receiving the donation was PACE Bahamas administrator, Patrice Miller, who said that “a lot of my girls do not have business attire for an interview, but with this provision, they’ll score that job.”

Over the years, the Sorority has partnered with the Sandals Foundation to raise money for PACE, including toward the construction and renovation of their headquarters. The Sorority has hosted résumé and mock job interview workshops for the young women as well.

Next month, NBAC will celebrate 45 years of dedicated public service in the capital, which is a hallmark of our overall mission to make impactful change to all Bahamians and residents on the island.

According to the Chapter President Krystal Culmer, one of the chapter’s priorities is empowering women and girls. 

“We know that motherhood is a challenge at any age, and teen mothers are navigating their educational journeys as some are still in school or graduated from school,” she said. “We know that many of them cannot afford business attire, but there’s a need to provide for themselves and their little ones.”   

The Sorority is a strong advocate for positive change. Delta, in Greek translation means ‘change,’ and so NBAC has taken up the torch to see the these young women’s current circumstances is not a set back, but rather a set-up for success. 

Next year, the chapter will host several fundraisers to raise money for our Bessie Mae Bowe-Rolle and Dame Dr Doris Johnson scholarships, and so we invite corporate Bahamas to partner with us in our mission to encourage and empower our youth in their pursuits for tertiary education.
