This penalty, 30 times larger than any previous airline fine in U.S. history, aims to set a new standard with the major to compensate affected passengers.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated, “If airlines fail their passengers, we will use the full extent of our authority to hold them accountable.”

Southwest, expressing satisfaction with the settlement, emphasizes improvements in customer service.
