NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Women in sports is turning into a phenomenon. Globally, female sports across several disciplines turned in record-breaking viewership numbers.

Here at home, women in sports are excelling as well. It’s something our Sasha Lightbourne had a chance to sit and reflect on in a recent conversation with the director of sports who just so happens to be a female.

Kim Rolle is the Director of Athletics at The University of The Bahamas.

Grand Bahamian Yolett McPhee-McCuin is the Head Coach of ole miss’ women’s basketball team.

Jonquel Jones is the Starting Center for the New York Liberty in the WNBA. Georgette Albury is the General Secretary for Bahamas Aquatics.

Then you have Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Anthonique Strachan, Keianna Moss, Rhanishka Gibbs, Saleste Gibson, Devynne Charlton, Rhema Otabor, Lori Iowe, Lashan Higgs, Simone Pratt – some of those names you may know and some you may not. But they’re all progressive women dominating in sports.

Director of Sports Kelsie Johnson described it like a staircase, citing her own personal achievements.

And Johnson says the best is yet to come from Bahamian women.
