Sprint Records Broken at High School Nationals

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Over 1600 athletes representing 61 schools across The Bahamas were on display at the original Thomas A. Robinson Stadium.

There was a brief break in the action as the opening ceremony for the Bahamas National High School Track and Field Championships took place Friday morning.

On the track, several sprint records fell in the early stages of the meet.

Tabernacle’s Avonte Lotmore set a new national record in the u13 boys 400m in 56.12s, easily surpassing the previous mark of 58.74 secs.

His Falcons teammate Sandra Russell also set a new record in the u13 girls 100m in 12.51 secs.

In the u13 boys 100m, Jack Hayward’s Jahtarie Hanna also set a new record in 12.20 secs.

Brion Ward of Queen’s College broke the 11 year old record with her time of 12.34 secs in the u15g 100m.

The meet continues through Sunday.

Basketball

Anton Francis was named junior women’s national basketball team head coach last month and is already on the ground looking to build his rosters.

Francis is spearheading a talent search this weekend in new providence and grand bahama for the upcoming under 15 and under 17 teams.

In Grand Bahama, tryouts will be hosted April 12th 4 to 6 pm and 10am on the 13th at the St. George’s Gymnasium.

In New Providence, tryouts will be hosted Saturday, April 13 at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium at 10am.

In order to participate, interested persons must register at the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s website bbfbasketball.com

NCAA Basketball

Frederick King becomes the latest bahamian to enter the ncaa transfer portal after two seasons with the Creighton Blue Jays.

This past season, the 6’10” sophomore center played sparingly behind returning Big East defensive player of the year Ryan Kalkbrenner.

He averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game over the course of his Blue Jays tenure.

The Mangrove Cay, Andros native had an opportunity to play at home last summer when the Blue Jays hosted a series of preseason exhibitions against european clubs at the Atlantis Resort.

Out of the NBA academy, he originally committed to Louisville before ultimately deciding to play for Greg McDermott at Creighton.

King joins Deyton Albury and AJ Storr as the other Bahamians searching for new programs in the transfer portal.
