LOS ANGELES – Consul General at the Bahamas Consulate General Los Angeles, Joy A. Newbold says Bahamian students living in California should be aware of the surroundings and make sure register with their office.

Newbold tells us they’ve recieved many calls from concerned Bahamian parents and citizens in the area after the recent protests and demonstrations at the university of California, Los Angeles..

The demonstrations are part of a wave of pro-Palestinian activism going on at American colleges, demanding an end to the war in Gaza, and that their universities divest from things fueling the conflict.

On Thursday, over 200 people were arrested, and police had to use flash bang devices as they tried to get crowds to disperse.

Newbold has this advice for Bahamians in the area.

For the consulate’s full press release you can visit the Bahamas Consulate General Los Angeles Facebook page.

But Newbold says even if you’re not in an area currently affected, you should still register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
