NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Law makers on both sides of the floor, concerned about the uptick in suicides and attempted suicides this year.

Just this week, a 45-year-old man in Guana Cay, Abaco, tried to take his own life, a disturbing reminder of the mental health challenges facing the country.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville says government is taking the issue seriously, pointing to the 2022 mental health bill and ongoing efforts to improve care.

Darville says the solution goes beyond legislation, as technology could also play a role in expanding access to mental health support.

Dr. Darville admits there’s a shortage of government psychiatrists but says the private sector is helping bridge the gap.

Still, he stresses that prevention especially early detection is crucial.

With suicide rates climbing, the question remains, will these initiatives be enough to tackle the crisis head-on?

Opposition Leader Michael Pintard agrees action must be taken, but he says he believes the solution requires a broader approach.
