SURINAME – Suriname’s government warning of more arrests as police have been put on high alert since Saturday, following a protest against the policies of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

Reports say the protest which spun out of control, saw hundreds of demonstrators storm the Surinamese parliament, to protest against price hikes and the reduction of electricity and fuel subsidies as a result of an International Monetary Fund program.

The group overwhelmed police who fired tear gas causing damage to the assembly building.
