NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man who attacked a pump attendant with a sword during an argument over his smoking has been ordered to perform community service.

Michael Hanna, 36, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and causing harm in relation to the November 22 incident.

Kerby Jeune was on duty at the Esso Gas Station  at East Bay and Fowler Streets when he got into a row with Hanna, who chopped him on the left forearm with a sword.

The injury was not serious, according to a medical report.

Hanna said the argument stemmed from Jeune telling him he wasn’t allowed to smoke at the pump.

Hanna begged the court for leniency, claiming that he wasn’t in his right frame of mind on the day in question.

He claimed that he was under the influence of alcohol and Molly at the time of the incident.

Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt ordered Hanna to pay Jeune $250 in compensation during a court appearance on November 30.

He was also ordered to perform community service at the Good Samaritan Senior Citizen’s Home.

Hanna has until January 9 to complete his community service.
