NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Taxi Cab Union is giving the government a seven-day deadline to respond to the questions centering on a rate increase for the industry. Union President Wesley Ferguson also blasting what he says is the over-saturation of taxi plates in the market.

The deadline comes as the union pushes for a 30% fare increase to offset the rising cost of fuel.

Last month, Ferguson told reporters the minister responsible Jobeth Coleby Davis seemed receptive to the proposal. Initially, a 25% increase was the goal. However, after meetings with the minister, Ferguson says it seems the minister has fallen off the grid. Last month, Coleby-Davis said the matter was being discussed in cabinet.

Ferguson also lashing out at what he determines is an over-saturating of taxi cab plates, which he says is putting countless longtime taxi cab drivers at a disadvantage.

He claims the agreement was for 100 plates to be issued, but according to Ferguson, that didn’t happen. Ferguson predicts taxi drivers will suffer greatly in the next three months which is normally a slow time for the industry.
