DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – The Bahamas came into the WBSC U-15 Pan Am World Cup Qualifier as the lowest-ranked team in the field at number 59, but pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament thus far.

The team came from behind with a 7th-inning rally to defeat Panama 6-5 Monday in Boca Chica, the Dominican Republic.

Panama is ranked #10 by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.

In the 7th inning, Kamdynn Miller’s single drove in Mario Dean for the game-tying run. As the play continued Malique Israel advanced from first to third and an errant throw got away from the Panamanian third baseball, allowing Israel to score the go-ahead run.

Crashad Thompson Jr. was the game’s winning pitcher.

The Bahamas is currently 1-2 in group a and will close out group play against the Dominican Republic and Argentina in the group stage.

Basketball

Kai Jones’ return to the NBA began in the G-League over the weekend.

Jones who signed a 10-day contract last Friday has made two appearances with the team’s G-League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

In his debut he posted 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals.

In game two, Jones had 8 points and 8 rebounds in just 17 minutes before he was forced to leave with a hamstring strain

76ers Head Coach Nick Nurse was in Wilmington, Delware to watch Jones’ debut.

He said the 23-year-old forward would spend the duration of the 10-day contract in the G-League and the team would re-evaluate based on his performance.

Jones recently opened up about his mental health struggles and subsequent coping mechanisms in an interview with NBA Insider Shams Charania.

Swimming

The pool at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatics Center has been completed, upgrades continue, but funding is still needed for the Bahamas Aquatics to reach its target goal to host the upcoming CARIFTA games.

Bahamas Aquatics President Algernon Cargill said the local organizing committee continues to seek sponsorship with the event less than two weeks away

Cargill added that this year’s CARIFTA Championships is expected to be the biggest ever with the addition of the 18 and over division.

One of those collegiate swimmers, Lamar Taylor will represent Team Bahamas at CARIFTA in the coming weeks, but before that he delivered another historic performance at the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Henderson State senior claimed the national title in the 100-yard free in 42.64 seconds.

In the 50-yard free, Taylor set a new school record in the prelims and was the top qualifier at 19.03 seconds, but his bid to repeat fell just short when he was injured in the final.

In the 100-yard back, Taylor finished third in 46.16 seconds.

Taylor also swam the lead leg on two record-setting relay teams.

His first leg of the 200 free relay in 19.10 seconds set the tone for the Reddies winning time of 1:16.50 seconds, a new division ii record.

He also swam the first leg of the national championship-winning 400-yard free relay team that took first place in 2:52.81 seconds.
