Team Bahamas Receives Warm Welcome in Chile

CHILE – Team Bahamas has passed its first test ahead of the second round of FIBA World Cup qualifying, defeating Chile 94-87 in a friendly in Santiago.

Franco Miller led the way with 30 points, including five three-pointers, while Domnick Bridgewater posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists.

Isaiah Mobley also had 19 points, along with eight rebounds, while going a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc. Kino Burrows added 10 points.

The game served as an important tune-up for the Bahamians, who are now turning their attention to their second-round opener against Uruguay on August 27 in Montevideo.

The window then comes home to Nassau, with the Bahamas hosting Panama on August 31 at Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium.

The Bahamas, Uruguay and Panama are all in Group F, along with Argentina, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The top three teams in each group, plus the best fourth-place team, will qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.

WNBA

Jonquel Jones returned to the court Saturday night, just four days after suffering a left ankle injury, and the Bahamian star helped the New York Liberty defeat the Indiana Fever 109-102 at Barclays Center.

Jones had been listed as questionable after leaving Tuesday’s loss to Chicago in the first quarter, but she was cleared to play Saturday and finished with a double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes.

She shot 5-of-10 from the field, 1-of-4 from three and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, while also adding an assist and a block.

The Liberty led for most of the second half, but Indiana erased a seven-point deficit late and tied the game at 100.

New York responded with a Breanna Stewart free throw and a crucial and-one from Leonie Fiebich, who returned from a seven-week foot injury and scored 20 points. Stewart finished with 22.

The win moved New York to 23-15, while Indiana fell to 24-14.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is heating up at the plate, and the New York Yankees are making their push in the American League East.

Chisholm homered for the 18th time this season Sunday as the Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3, taking the series two games to one.

The Bahamian second baseman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. His two-run shot came in the seventh inning, with Cody Bellinger aboard, extending New York’s lead to 7-2.

That came one night after Chisholm also went 2-for-4 in a 4-3 loss to Toronto. He broke up Dylan Cease’s no-hitter with a two-out single in the seventh, then doubled and stole a base later in the game.

So over the two games, Chisholm went 4-for-8 with two runs, two RBIs, a double, a home run and a stolen base.

The Yankees are now 74-56, second in the AL East, 2.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, who sit at 76-53.

New York has also won six of its last seven games.
