Yolett McPhee McCuin Leads Ole Miss Back to the Dance

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Yolett “Coach Yo” McPhee McCuin and her University of Mississippi Rebels are back in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, for the first time since they made consecutive tourneys in 2004 and 2005.

McCuin took over the team in 2018, going 9-21 that year. She’s managed to improve the team every year since, culminating in a 23-8 record this year with a record 11 wins in the historically tough SEC conference, securing her team an 8 seed in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament.

Their opponent is 9 seed Gonzaga, a team that went 28-4 on the season, a sublime record until you realize that it was inflated because the Zags played in the historically weak West Coast Conference, losing to their only power-5 opponents: Marquette and Stanford.

Shots go in, shots miss, but defense is consistent, and it’s been a hallmark of the Rebels all season. If they can effectively defend, they can make a deep run in the tournament.

They play on Friday night at 10pm.
