NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Now that Parliament has been dissolved and with the Provost Marshal’s public reading of the dissolution proclamation, The Bahamas has officially entered an electoral period that affects every voter with 41 writs of election issued on Thursday, by the Governor General.

This action now paves the way for elections in every constituency.

Her Excellency Dame Cynthia Pratt signed the writs of election for all 41 constituencies, which were then delivered to Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson.

Those writs must now be signed by each returning officer, which will indicate a vacancy in each of the 41 constituencies nationwide.

This then paves the way for individuals to be nominated and to contest the constituencies in the election.

Once signed, those writs will be gazetted, allowing the public to see the returning officer in each constituency.

A writ of election is the formal legal order that launches the election and it instructs returning officers across every constituency to hold polls.

The timetable is now set, with nomination deadlines, the close of the voters’ register, advance voting arrangements, and the date of polling itself.

Once the writ is issued, candidates must file their nomination papers on the set date and deadline.

Electoral officials must finalize polling lists and station staffing, and the campaign clock starts ticking for parties and independents.

On election day, returning officers will receive ballots under the authority of that same writ, oversee voting and counting, and then declare results for each constituency.

If margins are tight, recounts or election petitions can follow under prescribed legal channels.

The Governor General’s issuing of the writ is both symbolic and practical is a visible political affirmation that the state’s administrative and security machinery will support a lawful, orderly vote.

For the average Bahamian voter, this is the time to act by checking your registration and polling location, and on voting day, bring your voter’s card or accepted ID.

If selected for advance poll or planning to vote on May 12th, follow verified updates from returning officers and official sources.

The writ turns political talk into concrete deadlines.

Make sure you’re ready to make your voice heard.
