NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Prince and Princess of Wales, then the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge William and Catherine, visited The Bahamas in March as the final leg of their Caribbean tour.

The tour was part of the late Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee celebrations.

But before the couple even arrived, questions were being raised about who was footing the bill, and Bahamians weren’t the only ones with questions.

The trip was also coming on the heels of Barbados becoming a republic only months beforehand, removing the crown as its head of state, and at a time where similar rumblings were growing in other countries throughout the region.

Even here, some openly demonstrated, but that didn’t stop the royals’ three-day stay. The couple visited New Providence, Abaco, and Grand Bahama.

Their trip included experiencing authentic Bahamian culture and connecting with the public, but also paying their respects and surveying the catastrophic damage left by 2019’s hurricane Dorian.

At the reception on their last night in The Bahamas, the last night of their Caribbean tour, Prince William addressed the talks of becoming a republic.
