NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Red Cross Society was established by an act of Parliament in 1975. Since then, they have been committed to humanitarian work across the country.

While it is most known for its work during and after disasters, officials say their work never stops.

The Bahamas Red Cross Society plays a vital role in communities throughout the country. President Terez Curry says although they are most recognized for their efforts post disasters, she says they run programs aimed at serving the community year-round.

Meals on Wheels is another legacy program. Welfare Manager Valerie McKenzie says they feed about 180 people hot meals five days a week, while another 80 families receive monthly parcels.

She says these programs could not be possible without funding or volunteers. Resource Mobilization Manager, Antoinette Nesbitt and Youth Volunteer Manager, Catherine Lockhart both say there is a great need for both.
