“But this starts from your heart and starts from you. It starts from your inner desire to go ahead, to change the world, and make sure that you create value for the organization and provide a legacy and provide what we call a value proposition, a personal leadership, a personal leadership brand.”

Leadership failure does not always begin with a bad decision.

Sometimes it begins with a leader who never stopped to ask why they lead the way they do.

For international leadership consultant Ernesto Uscher, that internal work is not optional.

It is where effective leadership begins.

“I always tell people, and I live by this, you know, people ask what drives me. And I always say that I am fueled by my passion. I’m driven by purpose, and I’m grounded in faith. And I believe my faith governs everything that I do.”

For business owners, managers, and emerging leaders, that message carries a warning.

The pressure to produce results can be immediate.

But without self-awareness, leaders can damage trust, miss potential, and make decisions without fully understanding the people affected by them.

For Keshala Knowles, vice president of human resources, leadership is deeply connected to purpose.

Uscher with this steer for aspiring leaders.

“So you just mentioned it. This is not 100-meter, 100-meter dash. This is a marathon. But the key elements in terms of the first session that we saw was the framework to understand what really leadership means.”

The goal is not a quick fix.

Inside Cable Bahamas’ leadership development program, participants are being challenged to examine their strengths, their blind spots, and the expectations that come with leading others.

Uscher says that begins with honest reflection.

“So by understanding that, their self-awareness, there’s a little bit of self-understanding of those competencies they’re going to be receiving this week, their 360. So that gives them a first phase of understanding of where are they versus the expectations of the organization.”

It is one more lesson emerging from the leadership development program, and one that reaches beyond the people in the room.

A business can have strong systems, strong products, and strong goals, but if its leaders are not self-aware, the culture beneath those goals can weaken.

That is why the internal self-work matters.

Because leadership is not only what people see, it is also the responsibility carried when no one else is in the room.

“Those connections, those interactions, the decisions that I have to make, you know, you have to stop and think because those decisions are bigger than us. And that’s how I truly live my life, that these decisions are bigger than me.”
