NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Philip Maynard ‘Smoker’ Smith died in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas at the age of 51, on December 28, 2008.

Smith was sports journalist, spending most of his career at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas on radio and television.

Five years later, on December 28, 2013 – Eric Gibson died in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas at the age of 79.

Gibson, who was born in Mason’s Bay, Acklins, was a musician, entertainer, night club owner, sailor and cultural icon.

He founded the band King Eric and His Knights around 1957, would go on to open the King and Knights Club.

Gibson also helped to found the Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union (BMEU).
