NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Lynden Oscar Pindling was sworn in as Premier of the Colony of the Bahama Islands, in 1967. He was the first black premier and second overall after Roland Symonette.

In 2019, a Smithsonian Magazine article about Bahamian conch highlighted a new study that had found the country’s conchs have undergone “serial depletion.”

The study, published in the Journal Reviews in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture, analyzed surveys of conchs in The Bahamas taken between 2009 and 2017. Researchers then compared the data to historic surveys dating back to 1987.

Authors of the new study found intense fishing has had a dire impact as the number of adult conchs have fallen in direct proportion to increased fishing pressure.

In 2022, after a yearlong delay by the pandemic, World Expo was underway in Dubai.

Prime Minister Philip Davis who was the keynote, was accompanied by the Royal Bahamas Police Band, All-Star Band, Junkanoo and Dynamite Daisy Productions, to name a few. More than 160 Bahamians attended to expo to perform.

Thousands of visitors passed through the Bahamian pavilion, one of 192 countries on display.
