2013: Perry Christie Meets Pope Francis
On November 18, 2013, then-Prime Minister Perry Christie became the first Bahamian PM to meet Pope Francis during a historic audience at the Vatican.
The two leaders discussed immigration and ways the Catholic Church could support healthcare and education in The Bahamas. Christie, accompanied by his wife Bernadette Christie, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell, Financial Services Minister Ryan Pinder, and Sir Baltron Bethel, presented Pope Francis with books on Bahamian art and the nation’s 40th Independence Anniversary.
This visit followed Christie’s participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka, where he announced plans to appoint a Bahamian non-resident ambassador to the Vatican.
2020: Zonta Club Launches 16 Days of Activism
In 2020, the Zonta Club of Nassau kicked off 16 Days of Activism to combat gender-based violence. Forty orange bows were placed around Nassau Village to honor three women murdered in the community in 2019.
2022: FNM Demands Answers on FTX Collapse
In 2022, senior members of the opposition Free National Movement (FNM) visited the Office of the Prime Minister, pressing for answers on the collapse of FTX, which had filed for bankruptcy a week earlier.
