NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history on September 11th, 1928 – Clement Maynard, Jr, was born in New Providence.

Maynard was a politician, activist and medical technologist. He held numerous ministerial posts in the Pindling admininstrations from 1967 – 1992 and served as the country’s second deputy prime minister. He also helped to advance The Bahamas’ tourism product in the 1980s.

Born to Clement Travelyan Maynard a Barbadian builder and suffragist Geroginna Kathleen Symonette, he received his early education in Nassau before going to the United States and the United Kingdom to further his studies. 

In 1954 he joined the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and after the 1967 election he was appointed to the Senate as the Leader of Government Business. The following year in the 1968 election he was elected to represent Gambier. He would be successful in being re-elected to the House of Assembly in 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987 and 1992.

On January 17th, 1947 he married Zoe Ruth Davis Cumberbatch. They had five children: Julian (who died of cancer in 1995), Peter, Allyson, David and Clement III.

Having suffered a stroke in 2008, and been hospitalized for some time, he died at home on October 2nd, 2009, at the age of 81. He was given a state funeral on October 14th, 2009.

In 2020 – then Opposition Leader Philip Davis returned home from the United States,  three weeks after he was airlifted for treatment for COVID-19.

In 2021 – During drive-by rallies in Cat Island and San Salvador, one day after voting in the advance poll then Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis told supporters the FNM won.

And finally in 2022 was the proclamation of a new monarch. Members of the Senate, HOA, Privy Council and law enforcement gathering for the official delivery of the proclamation of a new British and Commonwealth monarch.
