NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, on September 2nd 1966, the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre was officially opened at the site of the old Oakes Field Airport.

The National Sports authority Manages the 450-acre sporting facility, that includes the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium, the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium and the Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium.

The location is the major base for sporting activities in the country.

Thousands of athletes have had their development programs connected to the sports center in some way, through competition or training.

Then in 1968 the Bimini Road or the Bimini wall was discovered underwater off the northwest coast of North Bimini by divers Manson Valentine, Jacques Mayol and Robert Angove.

The Bimini Road is a grouping of rectangular blocks that run a length of approximately half a mile, leading some to speculate that they are the remnants of a road of the mythical lost continent of Atlantis.

Fast forward to 1992, Vernon Symonette was sworn in as speaker of the House of Assembly. He served in that office until 9th April 1997.

Symonette was a member of the Free National Movement and was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1982 where he served until 2002.

He was born on 8 November 1937 in Matthew Town, Inagua, and was an accountant by trade. He passed away at the age of 84 in July 2022.
