UNITED STATES – On this day in Bahamian history, on September 5th, 1983 on the NBC Nightly News program Brian Ross presented a report on an alleged drug smuggling ring operating from Norman’s Cay in the Exuma chain.

The report accused American fugitive Robert Vesco of running the operation and paying officials in the Bahamas, including then Prime Minister Lyden Pindling as much as $100,000 per month to protect him.

The exposé prompted the Bahamian Government to deny the allegations made in the report calling them a “conspiracy against The Bahamas.”

The report also led to Pindling to go to NBC News in New York and appear on television to deny the charges made by Ross in the report against himself and the government.

On this day in Bahamian history, on September 5th, 2011the newly finished T. G. Glover Primary School opened on Horseshoe Drive on New Providence to 400 students. The school was named after educator and administrator Theodore Grant Glover.
