UNITED STATES – U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening a sharp escalation in trade tensions with France, saying he would impose a 200 percent tariff on French wines and champagnes after French President Emmanuel Macron declined to join his proposed board of peace initiative.

When asked about Macron’s refusal, Trump told reporters the French leader would soon be out of office, adding that the tariffs would push him to join, even if he chose not to.

A source close to the French president confirmed Monday France has no plans to participate at this stage.

Trump first announced the board of peace last September as part of his plan to end the war in Gaza, with recent invitations expanding the initiative to global conflicts.
