UNITED STATES – Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers are now set to stand trial, accused of rigging their pitches to help sports bettors profit.
A federal judge in Brooklyn has scheduled a May 4th trial date for Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, with prosecutors confirming they have not offered any plea deals.
According to the indictment, Clase began working with bettors in 2023, tipping them off about the speed and type of pitches he would throw.
Investigators say he even threw some first pitches into the dirt to guarantee certain prop bets, leading to at least 400,000 in fraudulent wins.
Ortiz allegedly joined the scheme in 2025, and agreed in advance to throw balls in two games in exchange for bribes.
Both men have pleaded not guilty.
