UNITED STATES – There’s now an official fifth type of diabetes, and it’s shining a light on health inequities worldwide.

The International Diabetes Federation has recognized Type 5 diabetes, linked to malnutrition in early life.

The federation says it affects up to 25 million people, mostly in low-income countries … where poor childhood nutrition leads to underdeveloped pancreases and low insulin levels.

Experts say this new classification could improve treatment access and awareness.

They say it also reminds us that diabetes isn’t one-size-fits-all.

From autoimmune Type 1, to lifestyle-driven Type 2, and even rare genetic forms, doctors say understanding the type is key to getting care right.
